Q. Some cars have a low ratio differential like 4.50 and higher bigger gear sets with two overdrives. Some have a high 2.68 differential ratio and higher ratio gears. Some have 2.68 high ratio differential and lower smaller gears. How do they choose this and why? What is it based on? Asked by J N - Sun Nov 30 15:32:33 2008 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments A. based on Horsepower and what the function of the vehicle is. the lower the the faster you will reach HP/torque curve of efficiancy. if engine can produce high RPM's and HP then high gears can be used because engine wont bog down from lack of power while trasferinjg power to wheels. Lower HP engines use the lower gearing to keep them in their HP range while trasfering power. The lower the gear the harder it is to turn, but produces quicker results, the differential gear will determine top speed. With low gears overdrives are needed so that engine isnt at max RPM and slow speed. The higher the gear is the easier it is to turn but takes longer to get to HP range. Tire size can also affect gearing.
