A webmaster (a blend of web and master), also called a web architect, web developer, site author, website administrator, or (informally) webmeister, sometimes heard in tongue-in-cheek feminine form web mistress, is a person responsible for maintaining a website(s). The duties of the webmaster may include ensuring that the web servers, hardware and software are operating accurately, designing the website, generating and revising web pages, replying to user comments, and examining traffic through the site. Webmasters "must also be well-versed in Web transaction software, payment-processing software, and security software." Webmasters may be generalists with HTML expertise who manage most or all aspects of Web operations. Depending on the nature of the websites they manage, webmasters typically know scripting languages such as Javascript, PHP and Perl. They may also be required to know how to configure web servers such as Apache or IIS and serve as the server administrator. An alternative definition of webmaster is a businessperson who uses online media to sell products and/or services. This broader definition of webmaster covers not just the technical aspects of overseeing Web site construction and maintenance but also management of content, advertising, marketing and order fulfillment for the Web site. Core responsibilities of the webmaster may include the regulation and management of access rights of different users of a website, the appearance and setting up website navigation. GNU Free Documentation License has anyone taken a course online through the International Webmasters Association? Q. I'd like to take an online course on web design and XHTML but am wondering which online courses are reputable. I'm aware that I can take courses through community colleges, but I'm also working on a deadline and need to complete the course by October at the latest. I've found classes online through the International Webmasters Association but am wondering what anyone's experiences have been, and am hesitant to enroll until I've gotten more information on it. Q. I know this is probably too good to be true, but I am having such a hard time finding a good few keywords for my site. I never imagined it to be this rough. To choose keywords, jot down anything that comes to mind and narrow it down later. A few questions you should ask yourself: What am I selling? What should my site do? Who am I gearing my site toward? What are some common things that come up in my site alot? Where is this business/service located? Who are you? Things like this can help you generate a good list of what to use for keywords. Keep in mind to not overdo this as using too many keywords and filling your page just to get good rankings can have you banned from spidering search engines like Yahoo and Google.
